Aseptic Meningitis

Overview

Aseptic meningitis is an illness, which resembles with bacterial meningitis. The only difference is that in Aseptic meningitis bacteria do not grow in the culture of the cerebrospinal fluid. It is a fluid, which is present around the spinal cord and the brain. The illness is characterized by fever, headache and inflammation of the lining of the brain

Causes

The illness can be caused by a number of factors like:

  • Due to fungi, viruses
  • Tuberculosis
  • Tick-borne disease
  • Some medications like over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications and antibiotics
  • Mycobacteria
  • Infections such as epidural abscesses

It has been observed that 50% of the cases of Aseptic meningitis are caused by echovirus and coxsackie virus. These two viruses belong to enterovirus family and spread through coughing and hand-to-touch contact. Other viruses like rabies virus, mumps, HIV, chickenpox, West Nile virus also cause the condition.

Treatments
Antiviral medication Modern Medicine

When the illness is caused by fungal or Mycobacterial infections, then treatment is required. If the illness is caused by Varicella virus and herpes virus, it can be treated with antiviral medications. Non-infections causes are treated with pain medications. As such no treatment is available for treating enteroviral aspetic medications.
